1. Introduction

When inputting characters from foreign languages, utilizing a candidate selection feature can simplify the process. Hangul encompasses a total of 11,172 characters, although the most frequently used subset consists of approximately 2,350 characters based on the Wansung method. Inputting the entire range of Hangul characters typically requires selecting from 28 candidates for a consonant-vowel pair, which can hinder efficiency. However, with the Wansung approach, the maximum number of candidates reduces to 18, allowing for more fluid and rhythmically natural Hangul text entry. This tool proves useful for those seeking an effective Hangul keyboard solution for iPhone.

2. Features

  • Facilitates straightforward Hangul input via candidate selection of Basic Hangul.*
  • Handles all 21 vowels uniformly, eliminating concerns about complex vowel combinations.
  • Supports rhythmic Hangul typing through automatic switching between consonants and vowels on the screen.
  • Reduces finger fatigue by positioning frequently used Hangul characters and jamos at easy-to-tap locations.
  • Ensures comprehensive input capability for all Hangul characters.
  • Includes Korean-Kanji input, allowing users to type the names of Korean celebrities in Kanji.
  • Offers input modes for Numbers, English, and Symbols, minimizing the need to switch keyboards.
  • Features a tool to convert Japanese Kanji into Hangul within the app.
  • Supports floating keyboard mode on iPad, enabling input into various applications and images.

*Basic Hangul consists of 47 characters added to the 2,350-character Wansung character set.

  • The keyboard includes 19 consonants and 21 vowels.
  • The arrangement of consonants and vowels on the iPad follows alphabetical order.
  • In portrait mode on iPhone, key placement prioritizes ease of tapping:
    • Consonants: Basic consonants (14) are centrally located; double consonant keys are positioned to the left and right.
    • Vowels: Basic vowels (10) are near the upper-center; composite vowels (11) are distributed left, right, and below correspondingly.
  • Moved keys are distinguished by a gray background; basic jamo keys have a white background.
  • The first Hangul candidate displays ssangsiot (ㅆ) in the initial position for past tense formations, aiding memorization and usage clarity.

6. Input Procedure for Hangul

  1. Select an initial consonant; the interface automatically shifts to vowel selection mode.
  2. Select a vowel; then corresponding Hangul candidates appear on candidate keys.
  3. Select the desired Hangul character from candidates; it is entered into your text, and the interface reverts to consonant input mode.
